CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Chile has received from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) a loan to partially finance the cost of the project: “Hiring and training of young scholars for the renovation of academic personnel and strengthening of research and graduate school activities” awarded to the Technical University Federico Santa María (UTFSM). The financial resources obtained through this loan will contribute to the funding of the academic position being offered through this call.

General Background

This call is aimed at filling one full-time faculty position in the Department of Electronics Engineering at UTFSM. The areas of specialization of the applicants must be in the field of either Automatic Control or Computer Engineering.

The academic objectives of this effort are the renewal of academic personnel, the strengthening of research capabilities, academic innovation, and the support of the postgraduate training programs (master's and doctorate).

The successful applicant will be asked to sign a three year performance agreement, that will specify the annual goals to be achieved in research and teaching. During this period, the candidate will be expected to mainly conduct research, with a limited activity of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. There will be an annual assessment of the achievement of the goals specified in the aforementioned agreement. A candidate having positive evaluations during the three years will be offered, at the end of this period, a permanent position in the Electronics Engineering Department.

Application requirements

Candidates may be a Chilean or foreign national, in possession of a doctoral degree with specialization in any of the aforementioned areas. They must also meet the following additional requirements:

1. To have obtained the doctoral degree during the last five years at a university of recognized quality outside of Chile, or at a Chilean university, with a doctoral program accredited by the Chilean National Accrediting Commission.
2. In the latter case the candidate must have completed an academic internship or post-doctoral period at a high quality research institution outside of Chile, for a period of at least one year.
3. Exhibit demonstrable results in the creation of knowledge, through patents and / or publications in ISI indexed journals.
4. In the case of applicants not fluent in Spanish, willingness to acquire within one year sufficient proficiency to be able to teach and interact with students.
5. To be willing to participate in training programs aimed at the use of modern educational methodologies and in the planning of the engineering education curriculum.
6. To be willing to be interviewed by the Selection Committee (via video-conference if a visit to UTFSM cannot be arranged).

Applicants must not have a full-time contract with UTFSM at the time of the application submission.

Documentation that must be included in application

1. Curriculum Vitae.
2. Formulation of a personal proposal for academic development, research and teaching.
3. Undergraduate and graduate grade transcripts.
4. Certificates of diplomas and degrees.
5. Contact data (postal and email) of two senior academics who are willing to provide academic and personal references. One of those references must be issued by the applicant PhD Thesis Supervisor. These references will be requested directly by the Project Director, according to a format approved by the Selection Committee.

Selection procedure

The decision on the received applications will be made by a Selection Committee comprising the Director of the Department of Electronics Engineering, two academics of the Department and the FSM0801 project heads. The final decision must be approved by MECESUP, with advice from the Committee for Advanced Human Capital.
